Nicole Miller has gone beyond clothes, and is launching products in a wide range of categories.

The Nicole Miller company may be 25 years old, but its loyal consumers are just getting a taste of what it has offer as a lifestyle brand.

Chief executive officer Bud Konheim announced the firm’s all-out accessories initiative, signing licenses for handbags, footwear, belts and jewelry, as well as other related categories in a bid to boost the brand’s revenue by 25 percent.

In the past year, the firm has been ironing out the kinks, such as changing its fashion jewelry licensee from Maurice Mac to Gigi Accessories, and the accessories seeds sown by Konheim and the Miller tem are set to bloom this fall on shelves at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, MyGiftee.com and other retailers.

Categories now include women’s shoes produced by Camuto Group, eyewear by Signature, belts with Roma Industries and handbags by NM Designs. Miller also licenses men’s shirting and ties with A.W. Change Corp.; umbrellas, pet products, baby and cosmetic bags with Essex; women’s golf accessories with Glove It, and several others for a total of 34 licenses. Included in that queue are 10 licensing agreements to produce home goods for Bed Bath & Beyond, with Liza Saunders, licensing manager at Nicole Miller said had been a vary lucrative niche for fashion firm.

“Everybody’s in the start-up phases” commented Sanders about the fashion accessories, who added that there has been a soft launch of handbags, belts, and shoes in the firm’s SoHo store in Manhattan.
The accessories are already a hit, according to Rogers Pimenta, general manager of the Nicole Miller Soho boutique. “The bags are doing awesome.” He said. “Just earlier, one of my good customers came in and bought a dress. We added the neck lace and shoes, and the first thing she said was, “Wow, the necklace really made the look” That’s the thing. It’s all complementary to the clothes.”

Styles included large leather satchels in cutout metallic leather, clutches in Miller’s crinkled metallic taffeta to pair with her evening dresses in the signature fabric, oversize leather belts with an ethnic feel to layer over tunics and dresses and skinny stiletto heels that wrap around the ankle several times.

Nicole Miller fine jewelry, produced by World Trade Jewelers, based in New York, the line includes gold pendants in Celtic motifs and elaborate crosses encrusted with pave diamonds. As with all the accessories categories, Miller herself had a huge amount of input in the design.

Miller sent all of her licensees in the direction of South America, a major influence on the fall read-to-wear collection.

“The jewelry represents who she is,” said World Trade Jewelry designer Maria Fryda Velarde. “I talk to [Nicole] about what her style is. She likes to approve everything and details are very important to her.”
“Nicole is who she is because she’s so involved,” said David Yallouz, ceo of Gigi Accessories, “my designers do the final touches, but it’s her vision. When you talk to her, you realize she’s genius. She knows what she’s doing.”

Kate Nienen, designer for NM Designs, which produced Nicole Miller handbags, had a similar experience working closely with Miller and her team. Based on Miller’s South American inspiration, Neinen sourced some vintage-looking, intricate hardware, which Miller just loved, according to Nienen.

Pearl Essence

Pearls have long been appreciated for their subtlety, but a number of designers now are using the gems in pieces that are anything but demure.

Even when abetted by the most advanced pearl-farming methods, an oyster’s chances of producing a high-quality South Sea pearl are no better than about 200 to 1.
At depths as great as 260 feet in the Indian Ocean off of northern Australia, divers gather these oysters while adhering to strict quotas that the Australian government has imposed to preserve the species. In the wild, a pearl forms around a parasite or a shell that becomes lodged within the oyster. The oyster reacts by secreting layers of nacre – a smooth, hard crystalline substance – around the irritant, and those layers eventually form a pearl. On board a vessel that serves as a kind of floating laboratory, technicians implant each oyster with spherical piece of freshwater mussel shell, around which, in theory, the oyster will secret nacre. Divers then return the oysters to the sea in nets that allow the animals to feed while making them easily accessible to the technicians, who nurture and monitor them for the few years it takes to produce a gem. Every two weeks during that period, the nets are briefly brought on board to remove from the shells any marine growth, which can carry parasites or diseases that might disrupt the formation of the pearls.
Despite these efforts, on average, only about half of the oysters will produce a South Sea pearl, and less then 1 percent of those will be of the quality that Chanel uses for its new Les Perles de Chanel, a collection that includes pieces in which large South Sea pearls seemingly spring from gold and diamond spheres and sunbursts. These pieces – as well as others designed with pearls of various colors, round or irregular-shaped Tahitian pearls, elongated or nugget like freshwater pearls, or domed mabe pearls – demonstrate how versatile the gems have become, however painstaking and uncertain their cultivation is.

Hammam

A Hammam, or Turkish Bath, is one of the most wonderful things that you could experience if you travel to Turkey one day. Popular in the Middle East for many reasons, going to a Hammam is a routine event, and certainly something that we in the West should consider taking up. If we all scheduled relaxation and self-care into our busy schedules, well, we would all be much more laid back.

Hammams are used for more than one reason; as places for social gatherings (what better time to have a chat with a friend than when you are totally relaxed?) and ritual cleansing (the steam completely allows toxins in the body to escape). The experience of the Hammam consists of first relaxing in the ‘warm room’ which is heated by a continuous flow of hot air, then moving to the ‘hot room’ which is, as the name entails, an even hotter room, before finally splashing with cold water. But it doesn’t end here. You then have a full body wash and then, the best part, receive a massage. You then head to the ‘cooling room’ to really dwell on your new found total relaxation.

The alternative name for Hammam; Turkish Bath, was created by Europeans finding out about this beautiful ritual through contact with the Ottomans in Turkey. However, Hammams are not found only in Turkey, but also Morocco, Syria, Iran and Yemen. Tea Cocktails Anyone?

Chado Supreme: Half iced sweet Birthday Tea, Half Vodka, Ice. Similar to Vodka and cranberry juice or orange juice. A delightful, magical drink. Serve in our colorful Love Tumblers.

Tea Tabla: black tea; 1/2 a lemon; 1 1/2 teaspoons of sugar; 1 1/2 ounces of rum. Hot tea with rum and a slice of lemon is delightful in winter. After the hot tea is poured, flambe the rum and mix the two. Add sugar syrup and serve with a slice of lemon in our pretty Lemon Glasses. Use the plates for small sandwiches.

Tea Sherpa: Half wine (red-preferably Bordeaux); Half tea liquor (preferably India Black tea); a slice of lemon; sugar to taste. The hot liquid tea should be poured into the wine and both delicately mixed and topped with lemon and sugar. Serve in our cute Yellow Gnome Tumblers.

Hooghly Hangover: 1 1/2 ounces Vodka; juice of 1/2 lemon; 1 rounded tsp sugar; 1/4 cup cold tea (approx.) Mix vodka, lemon juice, and sugar i the bottom of an old-fashioned glass, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Fill glass with ice and pour in tea. Stir. Serve with short straws. Garnish with a sprig of mint, if desired. Serve in our beautiful French Blue Glasses.

Himalayan Heights: 1/2 a lemon; 1 1/2 teaspoons of sugar; 1 1/2 ounces of rum; sprig of mint. Squeeze juice of 1/2 a lemon into a highball glass. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of sugar. Stir to dissolve. Fill with iced black tea. Stir. Garnish with a sprig of mint. Serve in our stylish Cameo Glasses and use the plates for small appetizer.

Royal Bengal Tiger: 1 tsp lemon juice; 2 dashes aromatic bitters; 1/2 tsp sugar (or 1 tsp sugar syrup); 1 1/2 ounces cognac; 4 ounces strong, cold tea. Mix lemon juice, sugar, and aromatic bitters in the bottom of a tall glass. Fill glass with ice cubes and pour in tea. Stir. Garnish with lemon slice and a sprig of mint. Red Envelope

The fall of an empire has taken place, and though we should reflect on history, we should not live in the past. When one great empire falls, it leaves space for another to develop. Okay, so we are not talking about something that will necessarily affect everybody, as the empire we are discussing is none other than Red Envelope, an online gift store, which is one of our biggest competitors.

As a growing company we saw Red Envelope as both a benchmark for quality and also as a competitor. But times are changing, as they do, and both unfortunately and fortunately, Red Envelope will no longer be either of those things for us here at MyGiftee.com. The big changes that have taken place within the company, which seemingly will ultimately lead to its demise, are; the resignation of both CFO William Gochnauer and board member John Pound; and the announcement of Wells Fargo Retail Finance that the company’s credit line is to be terminated, for various reasons, leaving Red Envelope with insufficient funds to continue operations.

As quoted on TechCrunch.com the company is “currently engaged in discussions with two potential acquirers for the purchase of substantially all of the Company’s assets”, but this may not happen in time for the company’s savior, and it may be forced to cease operations.

At MyGiftee.com, as nice people, we wish the best upon anybody and certainly don’t enjoy the demise of others but…we’d be lying if we said that we don’t feel a small collection of butterflies within our respective stomachs; Red Envelope was a HUGE competitor of ours, with an uncountable number of customers who will now be looking for an alternative source for gifts, and an alternative provider of that same service. We hope to step in and say to those people, “Hi, we’re here, we are not Red Envelope, nor do we try to be, but give us a try and you’ll see that the quality of our service and the level of care we put into each transaction, equals or exceeds that provided by the E-Giants.”

Tea is Healthy, Stimulating, Diuretic & Alkaline

Health:Tea leaves contain vitamins A,B,C (green teas in particular) K,P,PP and chlorophyll. They are also rich in fluoride and thus effective against tooth decay.
Stimulating: Tea contains two main elements, theophylline and tannin, whose stimulating properties are considerable. Theophylline has a marked action on the brain and central nervous system. Tea stimulates without exiting.
Diuretic:Tea has no calories or sodium. It dissolves food fats and aids digestion. Tea is therefore suited to salt-free diets.
Alkaline: As a result of its alkalinity, tea taken in normal quantities helps fight off the acidification of the human body.

Tea and Caffeine:
A cup of the may contain up to 3 times less caffeine than a cup of coffee- A release from the U.S.FDA. There is an impression that tea has more caffeine than coffee. It is true as far as a pound of loose tea to a pound of loose coffee. But when brewed, one can brew up to 150 cups of tea with a pound of tea, but with a pound of coffee only 60 cups can be made. Hence, the per cup content of caffeine in tea is far less than a cup of coffee. A six ounce serving of drip coffee has anywhere between 110 to 140 mg of caffeine, where as a 6 oz servings of black tea brewed for 3 minutes has only up to 36 mg of caffeine. The 36 mg caffeine content does up to 72 mg if the same tea i brewed for 5 minutes. Pick from our large Loose Teas selection!

Tea and Milk:
Milk is often added to black tea to add creamy texture and cancel astringent flavor. Some teas go well with milk such as Assam and Yunnan black teas. With other teas, such as green, white, or oolong teas, milk is not recommended. One must also be careful not to mix citrus, such as lemon with milk, as it will make the milk curdle in your tea.
